Check Your USCIS Case Status

Once you’ve filed with USCIS, you can track the status of your case using their online tool. Simply enter your 13-character number (without dashes) found on the USCIS receipt notice. The system displays the most recent action taken on your case and any upcoming steps.

U.S. Visa Bulletin/ Priority Dates

Published monthly by the Department of State, the Visa Bulletin shows when applicants in family-based and employment-based categories may move forward in the green card process based on the allotted availability of immigrant visas.

Because green card availability is limited by both category and country, many applicants must wait until a visa becomes available. Your “priority date”—the date your petition was filed—determines your place in line. If your priority date is earlier than the date listed in the bulletin for your category, your case is considered current.

USCIS Case Processing Times

Understanding how long your immigration case may take is an important part of planning your next steps. USCIS provides estimated timelines for most immigration forms, including applications for visas, green cards, naturalization, and more. These estimates reflect how long it took USCIS to complete 80% of similar cases in the past six months.

By entering your form type and USCIS office, you can see typical processing times and learn whether your case falls outside the normal range—information that may help you determine when to submit a status inquiry.
