Student and Exchange Visitor Visas
The United States welcomes thousands of international students and exchange visitors each year. Whether you’re pursuing an academic degree or participating in a cultural exchange program, the F-1 and J-1 visa categories allow eligible individuals to temporarily live and study or train in the U.S. Understanding the eligibility requirements and maintaining status are essential for a successful stay.
F-1 Student Visa
The F-1 visa is designed for individuals enrolled in full-time academic studies at a U.S. institution. Eligible programs include universities, colleges, seminaries, conservatories, high schools, elementary schools, and language training programs. To qualify, you must:
- Be accepted by a Student and Exchange Visitor Program (SEVP)-certified school
- Enroll as a full-time student
- Demonstrate proficiency in English or enroll in English-language coursework
- Show proof of sufficient financial resources to support your stay
- Maintain a residence abroad with no intent to abandon it
Employment Eligibility
F-1 students are provided options for employment during their degree programs and immediately following the completion of their programs. Options such as Curricular Practical Training (CPT) and Optional Practice Training (OPT) are available for certain eligible students.
J-1 Exchange Visitor Visa
The J-1 visa supports individuals participating in U.S.-sponsored exchange programs that promote cultural and educational exchange. Eligible categories include students, researchers, professors, teachers, au pairs, medical trainees, and interns. To qualify, applicants must:
- Be accepted into a Department of State-approved exchange program
- Obtain a Certificate of Eligibility (Form DS-2019) from a program sponsor
- Demonstrate intent to return home after the program
- In some cases, meet the two-year home-country physical presence requirement after the program ends
Note on Employment and Dependents
J-1 visa holders may engage in work as part of their program or with special authorization. Spouses and children (J-2 visa holders) may accompany the primary visa holder and may be eligible to work or attend school, depending on the program.
