Green Cards for Individuals Without a Family or Employment Sponsor
Not everyone has a U.S. employer or family member who can sponsor their Green Card application. Fortunately, there are several immigration pathways that allow individuals to apply for lawful permanent residence based on humanitarian protection, special status, or other long-standing ties to the United States.
Humanitarian-Based Green Card Options
If you have experienced hardship or fear of return to your home country, you may be eligible for a Green Card through one of the following:
- Asylee or Refugee Status: Individuals granted asylum or admitted as refugees may apply for a Green Card after one year in the U.S.
- Victims of Human Trafficking or Certain Crimes: T and U visa holders may be eligible to adjust status and apply for a Green Card after meeting specific conditions.
- VAWA Self-Petitioners: Victims of abuse by a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident spouse, parent, or child may qualify independently.
Special Immigrant Green Card Categories
You may qualify as a “special immigrant” under a range of designations, including:
- Religious Workers: Members of a recognized religious denomination entering the U.S. to perform religious duties full-time
- Special Immigrant Juveniles: Minors in the U.S. who have been abused, neglected, or abandoned by one or both parents
- Employees of International Organizations or NATO: Long-serving personnel and their qualifying family members
Other Individual-Based Green Card Options
- Diversity Visa Lottery: Individuals from countries with historically low immigration rates to the U.S. may be selected to apply
- Cuban Adjustment Act: Cuban nationals and their families who meet residency requirements
- Registry: Individuals who have lived continuously in the U.S. since before January 1, 1972
