Naturalization and Citizenship
What Is Naturalization?
Naturalization is the legal process through which a foreign national becomes a U.S. citizen after meeting specific eligibility requirements. Unlike acquiring citizenship through a U.S. citizen parent at birth or before age 18, naturalization is a voluntary application process that grants full rights and responsibilities of citizenship to lawful permanent residents.
Who Is Eligible for Naturalization?
You may be eligible to apply for naturalization if you meet one of the following criteria:
- You are at least 18 years old and have held lawful permanent resident status (Green Card) for at least 5 years.
- You are married to and living with a U.S. citizen, and have had your Green Card for at least 3 years.
- You have served honorably in the U.S. Armed Forces, either currently or in the past, including designated periods of conflict.
- You are the surviving spouse of a U.S. citizen who died while on active duty in the U.S. military.
- You are the child of a U.S. citizen and meet certain residency and age requirements.
In addition to the above, all applicants must generally demonstrate:
- Continuous residence for 5 years (or 3 years if married to a U.S. citizen) and physical presence in the U.S.
- Good moral character
- An ability to read, write, and speak basic English, unless exempt
- Knowledge of U.S. history and government (civics), unless exempt
- Attachment to the principles of the U.S. Constitution
