Family-Based Green Cards
Family-based immigration allows U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents to sponsor certain family members for a Green Card. These categories are divided into two groups: Immediate Relatives and Family Preference Immigrants. Each has specific eligibility rules and processing considerations.
Immediate Relatives of U.S. Citizens
Eligible immediate relatives include:
- Spouse of a U.S. citizen (i.e. marriage-based green card)
- Unmarried child (under 21) of a U.S. citizen
- Parent of a U.U. citizen (citizen must be 21 or older)
Family Preference Categories
If you are not an immediate relative, you may qualify under one of the following preference categories:
- F1: Unmarried sons and daughters (21 or older) of U.S. citizens
- F2A: Spouses and unmarried children (under 21) of lawful permanent residents
- F2B: Unmarried sons and daughters (21 or older) of lawful permanent residents
- F3: Married sons and daughters of U.S. citizens
- F4: Brothers and sisters of U.S. citizens (if the U.S. citizen is at least 21)
Unlike immediate relatives, preference categories are subject to annual visa limits and wait times, which vary depending on your country of origin and relationship.
Looking for Employment-Based Options?
If you are pursuing permanent residency based on a job offer, advanced degree, or extraordinary ability, you may qualify for an Employment-Based Green Card. These categories are available to qualified workers and professionals across several preference levels.
No Family or Employment Sponsor?
If you do not qualify for a Green Card through a family relationship or employment, there may still be options available through humanitarian or special immigrant categories. Learn more about these options on our Green Cards for Individuals page.
