Green Card Consular Processing
Consular Processing is one of the two primary ways to obtain a U.S. green card (lawful permanent resident status). It applies to individuals who are outside the United States and have an approved immigrant petition and a visa number available. Rather than adjusting status from within the U.S., applicants go through the U.S. Department of State at a consulate or embassy abroad to receive an immigrant visa. Once approved, they can enter the U.S. as a permanent resident.
Who Uses Consular Processing?
- Individuals residing outside the United States who are pursuing a family-based, employment-based, or other eligible immigrant visa
- People who are ineligible for adjustment of status within the U.S.
- Beneficiaries of humanitarian programs, special immigrant categories, or investor visas
